Congratulations to Brimley CTE student Andrew Bernier on being drafted into an apprentice program with Miron Construction! Andrew was also awarded a $2,000 scholarship in recognition of his hard work and dedication.

Andrew was the first student in the region to take part in the program. The local program was created by the Upper Peninsula Construction Council in collaboration with UP Michigan Works, EUPISD, and building trades unions, and is endorsed by both labor and industry partners. The program blends CTE classroom instruction with paid, hands-on experience on active construction job sites. As part of his work-based learning experience during his senior year, Andrew rotated through three different union contractors.

Eleventh and twelfth grade students from across the Eastern Upper Peninsula recently attended Career Day at Kewadin Casino in St. Ignace!

Students started the day by hearing short elevator pitches from more than 30 companies and organizations representing a wide variety of career fields. They then had the opportunity to visit booths, ask questions, and learn more about careers that match their interests and future goals.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs continue to provide students with opportunities to become career ready while exploring the many educational and career pathways available to them after graduation. Events like Career Day help students connect classroom learning with real-world careers and future possibilities.

Thank you to all of the businesses, organizations, and presenters who helped make this event a valuable experience for our students!

The CTE millage supports amazing opportunities for growing student talent, preparing the next generation of skilled workers, and strengthening our local economies by helping students build the skills needed for in-demand careers right here in the EUP.

🎉 EUP Regional History Day at LSSU was a huge success! 🎉

We had an amazing day on Friday, March 2026 celebrating student learning, creativity, and historical thinking!

203 students from six area schools chose to compete:
• Brimley (Elementary & Middle School)
• DeTour (Middle & High School)
• JKL Bahweting (Middle School)
• Pickford (Middle & High School)
• Sault Schools (Elementary & Middle School)
• St. Mary’s (Elementary & Middle School)

Students presented thoughtful, well‑researched projects covering a wide range of topics—all connected to this year’s theme: Revolution, Reaction, Reform. Their hard work truly showed!

🏅 91 students will advance to the Michigan History Day State Finals at Saginaw Valley State University on April 25, 2026. Congratulations and good luck to all of you!

A huge thank‑you to the nearly 50 volunteers who made the day possible—judges, community members, and Sault High students from National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America who helped as room monitors. We couldn’t do this without you!

And a special thank‑you to LSSU for the use of the Cisler Center and the Arts Center. Your support helps bring this incredible event to life every year.

The assistant teacher may substitute for the lead teacher in his/her absence.

We are bringing our Young Women in STEM (YWIS) overnight sailing program to the U.P. July 27th - 29th and are looking to fill 12 spots with ladies entering grades 9-12 or recently graduated high school. This 3 day, 2 night overnight sailing adventure will start in Sault Ste. Marie and end in Hessel. YWIS aims to inspire youth to pursue STEM careers and is ideal for young women interested in sciences, the Great Lakes, sailing, or looking to have amazing summer adventure with the chance to meet some cool folks!

During this voyage, participants will study and analyze fish, plankton, water, and lake sediment and develop a research project on invasive species or other topics of interest. They will help the crew with vessel operation, including hoisting and handling sails, plotting and steering a course, and assisting with meals in the galley. We are excited to announce that Higher Orbits will be back at LSSU in June to host another Go For Launch! program for students who are going into grades 8-12 in the 2026-27 school year! This will be a two day event held on June 16 and 17. Students will work directly with Astronaut Greg H. Johnson as well as former NASA International Space Station Astronaut Instructor and Higher Orbits Founder/CEO Michelle Lucas. Through this experience, students will develop a project and compete to have that project launched to the International Space Station.🧑‍🚀🚀
