November naturally invites us to pause and think about gratitude. In education, there is certainly much to be thankful for, but often the things most deserving of our gratitude are found in ordinary moments. They are found in the employee who arrives early to make sure a building is ready for students. In the bus driver who starts the day with a friendly greeting. In the teacher who tries one more approach because a student hasn’t quite found success yet. In the mental health provider calming a learners’s anxiety. In the paraprofessional offering patience and encouragement, the food service employee who knows a student by name, the office professional who helps a worried family, the technology or maintenance staff member who quietly solves a problem, or the administrator working through a difficult situation with care.

Across our region, education happens because people in many different roles choose, day after day, to show up for learners of all ages and for one another.

That makes perseverance something worth celebrating this November, too.

Perseverance in schools is rarely dramatic. More often, it looks like adapting when plans change, extending grace during a difficult day, learning something new, having a challenging conversation, solving the next problem, and returning tomorrow ready to try again. It is choosing to believe that our work matters even when its impact may not be immediately visible. And it does matter.

Every employee contributes to the experience our learners and families have with their schools. A safe building matters. A welcoming voice matters. A reliable ride matters. A nutritious meal matters. A lesson that finally clicks matters. A listening ear matters. So does the colleague who asks, “How can I help?”

As we move through November and toward Thanksgiving, perhaps our challenge is not simply to feel grateful, but to express it. Thank the colleague whose work makes yours easier. Recognize someone whose effort often happens behind the scenes. Tell someone when you notice their kindness, patience, creativity, or persistence. And take a moment to recognize your own perseverance as well.

Education has never been work accomplished by one person, one classroom, or one department. It is the collective effort of people with different talents and responsibilities working toward something larger than themselves.

To every person serving students, families, schools, and communities across our region: thank you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for continuing to care. Thank you for persevering. And thank you for the many ways, both seen and unseen, that you make a difference.

May November give each of us a reason to pause, appreciate how far we have come, and recognize the people who make the journey worthwhile.
