And just like that, we’re back to school! I’m excited for the start of the 2022-2023 school year. I am so thankful for every school employee who has returned to or joined a school staff to contribute to the success of our students. Regardless of position, every school employee has an incredible opportunity EVERY DAY to positively impact our students in the region. Thank you! Your work is so important, and so very much appreciated!
This summer, I was fortunate to hear Dr. Joe Sanfellipo speak. Many of our area administrators studied his book Lead from Where You Are this summer. One of Joe’s points during his presentation was “start your day with joy AND end your day with joy”. As educators, we are in a unique position of truly impacting our future. Let’s be proud of our daily work, and intentionally share that pride and joy with our students, our communities, and our colleagues.

MICIP (SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT)
MDE has released this memo articulating the need for at least one goal in the MICIP platform, with additional alignment between that goal and the Consolidated App expected in the future. As in the past, districts are required to have a school improvement plan in place.
PLEASE NOTE that if you are already engaged in any type of continuous improvement process (district-facilitated MICIP, ISD-facilitated MICIP, district-created internal process, etc.), a fairly brief conversation may be all that is required to transition from nothing in the platform to a meaningful start.

GENERAL EDUCATION
LITERACY
· NEW for 2022-23: Beginning this fall, ELA supports (delivery format, content, structure) will be determined on a district-by-district basis per request.
· Some process supports already being offered include Professional Learning Community facilitation, Schoolwide Literacy Plan construction, Literacy Team facilitation, ELA data analysis/application, and MICIP integration.
· Elementary content supports could include participation in professional learning aligned with the Essential Instructional Practices and the Comprehensive Literacy Instructional Framework.
· Secondary content supports will be focused on Disciplinary Literacy integrated with Content Area Literacy and can be delivered in small groups and/or one-on-one through a tailored coaching model.

Back to School 2022 Newsletter – Highlights:
· Irene Miller, author & Holocaust survivor, will be coming to Sault Ste Marie in early September. On September 13, EUP ISD area students in 8th-12th grade are invited to the LSSU Arts Center to hear Irene speak about her survival journey and how it has impacted her life and outlook on society and the world. · The Social Studies Teacher Leader Corps is excited to announce our 2022-2023 schedule! Our first meeting is on September 27, 2022 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. We will be working with Paula Finfrock and Native American Advisors to explore the Maawndoonganan Social Studies Resource developed by the Confederation of Michigan Tribal Education Departments. K-12 teachers who cover social studies content in the EUP ISD region are welcome.

CTE Events 2022-2023
Manufacturing Day- Manufacturing Day is being planned for October 26th. It will be held on the campus of LSSU at the Cisler Center. The event is for all 9th grade students. The goal of Manufacturing Day is to expose 9th grade students to the many careers in manufacturing.
Health Science Day- A Health Science Day is being planned for December 16th. The event will be hosted by War Memorial Hospital. It is designed to be a Career Awareness Day for all 10th grade students in the region. Students will rotate through 12 stations:

The goal of the tour is to provide students with information about the various careers in a health care setting and link those careers to the CTE classes being offered in the region.
CTE Program Tours- During the month of February, all 10th grade students are invited to tour the CTE programs in the region. The goal of the CTE tours is to provide 10th students an opportunity to see the CTE programs and learn more information about the various programs prior to scheduling for fall classes.
Vocation Trades Day- A Vocational Trades Day is being planned for the spring of 2023 for all 11th and 12th grade students. The goal of the Trades Day is to expose the students to the many employers in Northern Lower Michigan as well as the Upper Peninsula.

Regional Data Manager Meetings
Data Managers from all regional schools are asked to participate in these meetings in order to create and communicate regional processes related to student enrollment, NWEA, technology, and reporting. Weekly support sessions will be available on a drop-in basis. These will take place on Thursdays at 1pm. See the Data Management Team in O365 for updates and meeting links.
NWEA Testing for 2023
Testing plans will help ensure that all students have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning and growth. A plan to complete testing one week before the end of the testing window can help account for student absences.

o September 1, (1-3 p.m.): Sex Ed Supervisors Meeting - Is your school looking to get up-to-date on reproductive health education? Attend this meeting to receive updates on law & policy and plan for the school year. Sex ed supervisors will receive materials to facilitate sex ed advisory board meetings and review school-wide data. These meetings will be held via Zoom. If you are not able to attend on September 1, please contact Helen Craig, Regional School Health Coordinator, to schedule a meeting time that works for you.
o September 29 (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.): Regional Health & PE Educator Curriculum Resource Team - This full day workshop with embedded professional learning around current topics, as well as opportunities for round table discussions between northern Michigan health & physical education teachers. This event will be held at the Eastern Upper Peninsula ISD in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Virtual attendance is available.
· Comprehensive School Health Workshop Schedule for the 2022-2023 School Year
· VapeEducate: NorthCare has partnered with the UP Communities That Care coalition to help support education for adults in our community. VapeEducate provides self-paced modules on vaping health risks, vape products, marijuana and vaping, and trends in vaping. To receive access to these modules, fill out the linked google form and a login credential will be sent to you. These modules are appropriate for health/PE teachers, administrators, counselors, social workers, and other school staff.
CULTURAL COMPETENCY
New this year the Cultural Competency Consultant is facilitating Native Advisor/Title VI Coordinator PLCs. Administrators are more than welcome to register. Those dates are as follows:

Consider having your school participate in the Indigenous Food Week Social Media Challenge September 12th-16th. Food is a wonderful way to open conversations up around Anishinaabe culture as well as connecting with people around you. FYI: Frybread is NOT a traditional Indigenous food, it is considered a colonized survivor food. Foods to try: wild rice, corn, beans, squash, berries, venison, whitefish, etc.

Welcome New Regional Special Education Staff!
As we enter a new school year, the EUPISD special education department is happy to welcome many new special education teachers, providers, and support staff. To support new staff, the EUPISD works to ensure all providers have appropriate approvals & credentials. Additionally, a robust professional learning schedule has been developed for the 2022-2023 school year that is designed to meet the needs of new professionals and enhance the skills of our veteran staff.
Special Education Approvals & Credentials
The EUPISD is tasked with maintaining a comprehensive list of special education providers, ensuring proper certification / approvals, and facilitating temporary approvals for those who are not yet fully certified. Please provide the ISD special education department information regarding new hires into the district – those who are fully certified as well as those who will be pursuing a temporary approval. We want to help make the transition into EUP Special Education as smooth as possible!
