SPECIAL EDUCATION MILLAGE

On August 2, 2022, voters are being asked to approve a renewal of .2773 mill and an increase of .7500 mill.  The funds will be utilized to provide state and federally mandated special education services to children with disabilities. Funds will support equipment, facility upgrades and transportation for special education students ages 0-26 in local districts in Chippewa, Luce, and Mackinac Counties.

Anyone who lives in the EUPISD service area, is 18 years of age or older on election day and is registered to vote on or before the election day, can vote. I encourage you to get out and vote.  Absentee ballots are currently available.  Contact your city or township clerk for an absentee ballot.

If this .9773 millage is not approved, the EUPISD region will lose $2.48 million annually in special education revenue. Local district general education dollars will be used to help offset expenses for state and federally mandated special education services.  For more information, contact Angie McArthur, Superintendent or Rachel Fuerer, Director of Special Education at 906-632-3373.

EUPConnect BROADBAND SURVEY

Broadband Internet is an essential to life in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Unfortunately, reliable broadband access is not available throughout the region. To bring Broadband access to every 911 address in the EUP, more accurate information about connectivity in our region is needed.

Over the next few weeks, every household in the 3 counties will receive a postcard with instructions on how to participate in the survey. The survey may be completed digitally on the web or a paper survey available by request for those who might not have access. The survey will take about 5-minutes to complete with one response requested for every household, business, vacation, or recreational property with a 911 service address. The results of this short survey will be used to facilitate public-private partnerships which will seek funding from state and federal sources for broadband infrastructure deployment in the region.

To complete the survey, go to www.MichiganMoonshot.org/EUPConnect. For more information, call 906-259-8300.
