SCHOOL NEWS
At a recent community event, a group of students from Sault Area Public Schools volunteered to assist with setup, games, and fundraising. The students were friendly and courteous to the attendees and were a great help. I know this occurs in many communities, but I wanted to commend the students for taking their time to help. Volunteering is an easy way to support the community and organizations. It was heartwarming to see these students at work! If you have talent or time, reach out to any of your community organizations to offer your assistance. Our communities are better for it!
We have a shortage of teachers and other positions in Michigan schools. The Michigan Department of Education recently announced a grant program for schools called “Grow Your Own” as part of the Future Proud Michigan Educators. The first round of grants provides mini-grants (up to $10,000) for support staff to become certified teachers. Local school districts who are interested in this can find additional information at the Future Proud Michigan Educator website. Additional grants are available for preparation and recruitment activities. The deadline for the grant cycle is Friday, March 18.
Education is a challenging, but very rewarding field. There is no other career where the impact is greater on our future!

Regional History Day
Friday, March 11, 2022 is Regional History Day! This year the event will be held virtually. Please use the google form linked here to record your school’s planned participation in Regional History Day and share local history dates. Local fairs should be completed by February 21. Regional History Day projects will be judged during the week of March 7, with prizes and winners announced March 11, 2022. Discovery Education
Discovery Education is a resource for classroom use that includes media, curriculum, and activities to support on-site and virtual learning. Regional Data Manager Meetings

HIV Prevention/Sex Education Framework – Upcoming Trainings
Training dates have been set for HIV Prevention & Sex Education Framework and are available for registration via Wisdomwhere. In Michigan, school districts are required to teach about dangerous communicable diseases, including, but not limited to, HIV/AIDS. Instruction regarding dangerous communicable diseases must be offered at least once a year at every building level (elementary, middle/junior, senior high). Principals, use the following form to share what HIV prevention curriculum your school is using as well as who is responsible for teaching HIV prevention in your school building: Google Form. Training dates & information:
- February 23, 2022 (Tentatively in-person at the EUP ISD or virtual attendance is available)
- March 1, 2022 (Tentatively in-person at the COP ESD or virtual attendance is available)
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Extended School Year Services
Extended School Year (ESY) services refer to special education and/or related services provided beyond the normal school year or school day for the purpose of providing a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to a student with a disability. Students may suffer losses of social, behavioral, communication, academic, self-sufficiency, or other skills during periods of interruption of services that are so significant that they can jeopardize progress made during the normal school year. To ensure students' needs are being met, Individualized Education Program (IEP) Teams are required to consider ESY services at every IEP meeting. Summer Y.O.U. Program
The EUPISD, in partnership with Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), is excited to again offer supported summer employment opportunities for youth with disabilities via our Summer Youth Opportunity Unlimited (Y.O.U.) program. The program application will open on February 1, 2022 and remain open through March 1, 2022. The application is intended to be completed by the student and their special education case manager / teacher. Please note - the applications will be sent only to the teachers. The special education teacher will need to fill out the application with the student. The YOU Summer Work Program will run from June 20, 2022 through August 5, 2022. Project Search
Project Search is an internship based work experience program (located at War Memorial Hospital) for young adults (ages 18-26) with disabilities. Interns gain hands-on work experience through three different internship rotations based on the interns’ interests and career goals.
