Attitude is Everything
We often complain about things as they relate to our work in education or our daily lives. We complain about legislation, created by elected officials with no preparation or credibility, deciding on what happens in our classrooms. We complain about the lack of proper financial support to meet our children’s educational needs. Some of us complain about the weather, the driver who pulled out in front of us, politics, the lack of this or that. It seems that some among us need a constant level of controversy in their lives. They are always upset about something and don’t mind sharing it with others. It is easy to get caught up in the constant negativity, especially with today’s social media.
What if we stopped buying into the negativity around things we can’t control? What if we focused our energy on positivity and how we respond to things? What if we applied our abilities to solutions rather than problems? What if we took control of the things we can control?
We can control how we respond when a child does not perform as expected. We can control how we respond when we see another person in distress. We can control how we react when someone is rude to us. Most importantly, we can control our own attitude.
I am reminded of a tremendous piece written by Charles Swindoll that I share below.
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.
When considering a multi-tiered system of supports, every tier of support matters and depends on each other. Each level needs to be intentional, well executed, and monitored to ensure students have access to consistent, high quality education every day. For more information, read our EUPMTSS Newsletter. EUP READS Event
EUP READS is an event to highlight and promote reading for EUP families. JKL Bahweting School has been organizing this event for the past six years and it will be hosted at LSSU Cisler Center on March 11 from 6-8 p.m. Please see the attached flyer.
Reading Recovery®, Literacy Lessons™, & Literacy Support
Administrators & Teachers: If you are considering or wanting information about training teachers in Reading Recovery, Literacy Lessons, or Literacy Support for the 2019-20 school year, please contact Brooke Beacom at email@example.com. Regionally, if we have eight or more interested teachers to take the course, we will have a cohort for the Oakland University class for the upcoming year.
Reading Recovery®: Top to Bottom Newsletter February Edition developed by Teacher Leaders; Brooke Beacom from the EUPISD (the most northern Michigan Reading Recovery Site) and Maeghan McCormick from Jackson County ISD (the most southern Michigan Reading Recovery Site). This quarterly newsletter was created in an attempt to provide a platform to share instructional information, theory, and stories. Administrators will find information about implementing with fidelity, research, and whole school benefits from investing in Reading Recovery, Literacy Lessons, and Literacy Support.
New Social Studies Standards to go to State Board
In 2014, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) undertook the task of reviewing and updating the Michigan Social Studies GLCEs and HSCEs, adopted in 2007. The update committee was given four guidelines to follow based on feedback from teachers and other stakeholders in the field:
- Fewer standards, clearly written, with higher rigor. (Fewer, Clearer, Higher)
- More integration of content
- Must reflect deeper student learning
- Must increase student outcomes
By the end of 2014, the first draft of the standards was completed and submitted for review and public comment. After the review process finished, the writers reconvened and incorporated the feedback into a new draft. This process was repeated seven more times.

The new standards are slated to be brought to the Michigan Board of Education in March of 2019, which will trigger another round of Listen and Learn sessions across the state, and a new online survey will be made available to the public for more feedback.
The EUPISD Listen and Learn session is scheduled for May 8, 2019, from 6-8 p.m. The public sessions and online survey will be open for two months, after which the MDE will review the feedback. If this process works as it is intended, the new standards will be up for adoption by the Michigan Board of Education in June of 2019.
EUP STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
FIRST Robotics Event at Lake Superior State University: April 5-6
We are fortunate to have a FIRST Robotics District Competition at LSSU this April! If you have not been to an event yet, they are excellent events to watch and are open to the public. In addition, volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities listed below along with contact information for volunteer coordinators.
STEM Integrated Learning Teams - Day 4 of STEM Integrated Learning Teams (ILT) will take place on March 19. STEM Integrated Learning Team (ILT) meetings give teachers the opportunity to work collaboratively within an integrated STEM learning environment. This year, learning will include work in three strategic areas: Community Connections, Innovative Programming, and Mathematical Modeling. Our March 19 meeting will include connections with Cloverland Electric and the Lake Superior State University Aquatic Research Lab. Our group is also developing a Teacher Externship Program to allow teachers to work with businesses and organizations during the summer to gain insight into career connections that they can apply with their students.
Pi Day at LSSU will take place on March 13, 2019 at the Walker Cisler Center on the Campus of Lake Superior State University. Students in middle school and high school will have the opportunity to compete in a math competition. There are both middle school and high school divisions, and teachers were invited to register teams of five students. Registration is closed as of March 1.
Trig Star will take place in the EUP on May 1, 2019. Trig Star is a geometry competition for high school students across Michigan. The Trig-Star competition is a national trigonometry competition open to high school students throughout the country. Trig-Star is designed to show students real world applications of trigonometry in the land surveying and engineering professions. The students are given four questions, and the student that has the most correct answers in the least amount of time is declared the EUP regional winner, winning a prize and receiving the opportunity to enter their score to the statewide competition . Teachers and students from all EUP districts are invited to attend. Jeff Davis of Great Lakes Surveying and the EUP STEM Region sponsor this event. Teachers can register their students HERE.
EUPISD Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Seeks Nominations for Educator of the Year Awards
It’s that time of year again! The EUPISD Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) would like to recognize area educators and others who provided exceptional services to students with disabilities during the 2018-2019 school year.
The PAC will acknowledge individuals in the following categories: special education teacher, general education teacher, paraprofessional, ancillary staff, other support staff (transportation, secretarial, etc.), administrator (supervisors, principals and superintendents), volunteer, and community/group agency.
Please submit your nominations by completing the first page of the attached form. Nominations are due by Friday, March 22, 2019. Nominations can be submitted via email to Jennifer Jahn (firstname.lastname@example.org) or mailed to PAC/Special Education Department, 315 Armory Place, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.
The rubric on the second page is included to inform you of the criteria considered when choosing winners.
Please share this with your staff, parents or anyone else who may want to recognize an individual for their extraordinary work for students with disabilities.

As School Social workers, we are indeed “lucky enough” to be able to carry out the important work that impacts many students, staff, families and communities. Data Management Team Meeting: March 8, 2019
If you deal with data in Illuminate (Illuminate leaders, secretaries, counselors, administrators, teachers), please join the Data Management Team. Meetings are quarterly and deal with all areas of using Illuminate: report cards, GradeBooks, transcripts, demographics, special education, reports, lunch program, and behavior. EduPaths: Free Online Professional Development for Educators
EduPaths is organized into pathways containing self-paced courses. Choose a pathway that meets your professional learning objectives or just continue to learn. Pathways include: Instruction, Data, Curriculum, Assessment, Early Childhood, Leadership, and ADA Compliance.
REMC Association of Michigan Free Professional Learning
We offer both virtual courses and face-to-face events. All offerings are free and open to Michigan school personnel. SCECH credit is available and varies from offering to offering.
Virtual Courses: You can take these courses “just to learn” or you can complete all assignments. They take place over three weeks with two webinars and four-ten hours of resource review, assessment development and written reflection.
Face-to-Face Events: PLAYDATES, Discovery Education Experience and the Classroom Maker Summit are held at various times and locations and are often hosted by local REMCs. Meet up with colleagues and learn together.

The Overview lasts about one hour and is for newer employees who want to know more about how they can best use their investment accounts to ensure a secure retirement, even if retirement is a long time from now.
You will learn:

- The differences between the 457 and 401(k) Plans
- Your investment options in Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3

For all public-school employees hired BEFORE July 1, 2010
The Planning Your Retirement Workshop (PYR) is designed for public school employees in the defined benefit pension plan first hired before July 1, 2010 who are within five years of retirement. These meetings were, until recently, known as Pre-retirement Information Meetings (PRIMs). The workshop lasts about two hours. We also encourage you to generate a pension estimate in miAccount and bring that estimate with you to the meeting.
The meeting will also cover:
- Meeting eligibility requirements;
- Picking Pension Payment Option;
- Deciding on insurance;
- Reviewing plans, choosing a retirement date, and applying for retirement; and
- Adjusting to retirement
