About U.P. SMILE
The project, named Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Science and Mathematics Integrated through Literacy and Engineering (UP SMILE), is a professional learning opportunity for middle and high school mathematics and science teachers to help them embrace 21st century teaching and incorporate cross-curricular Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning in their classrooms. This will be accomplished by providing teachers with a deeper content knowledge in applied technologies, along with providing professional learning for the integration of the four STEM components.
UP SMILE will provide teachers with resources and training in technologies that include 3-D Printing, digital sensors for data collection, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, and computer coding. This will be followed by professional learning centered around the integration of mathematics and science pracices, pedagogy and instruction, literacy integration, and connections with industry and higher education.
Participating teachers will be collecting data, creating educational content, and working as a learning community in order to identify student thinking and understanding trends when dealing with demanding integrated content. U.P. SMILE also aligns with an observed common professional growth goal in which teachers wish to use technology resources to increase student engagement, and the technology resources utilized will build a familiarity with devices for teachers and their students to better prepare them for life outside of school.
