The Add+VantageMR® professional development program is comprised of two courses.  It provides teachers with efficient and effective assessment tools to recognize their students' current understandings of number concepts, and to support data-driven instruction.  Forming collegial teams is encouraged during the courses to provide for ongoing study.  Add+VantageMR® teachers analyze and modify instructional tasks to meet the needs of a diverse range of students.  This expertise allows teachers to customize any commercial mathematics package specifically for the individual children in their classroom.  Add+VantageMR® level of assessment and analysis is particularly useful in forming small group instruction within a math classroom.

    Add+VantageMR® Course 1 (Course Length: 5 days)

Teachers learn about Math Recovery® assessments where the focus is on a continuum of learning in relationship to the Learning Framework in Number.  Add+VantageMR® then addresses how to analyze the assessments and make instructional choices that are appropriate for students' current understandings.  The assessments are diagnostic in that they also aid in identifying areas of need for students.

Content addressed in Add+VantageMR® Course 1 includes:

    • Number Words & Numerals
    • Structuring Number
    • Addition & Subtraction Add+VantageMR® Assessments
As part of the course, participants receive the text, Teaching Number in the Classroom for 4-8 Year-Olds, course handbooks, and various teaching materials.

    Add+VantageMR® Course 2 (Course Length: 5 days)

Add+VantageMR® Course 2 builds upon the work done in Course 1.  This course includes items needed for teachers to meet the Common Core State Standards.

Once teachers have taken Course 1, then they can extend their own learning to include:

    • Place Value Concepts
    • Multiplication & Division Concepts
As part of the course, participants receive the text, Developing Number Knowledge for 7-11 Year-Olds, course handbooks, and various teaching materials.

After completing both courses, teachers are able to confidently administer all five assessments and determine a student profile to guide day-to-day instruction for each student in such a way that the teacher has a clear picture of the student's current understanding and the next step he or she needs to take.

This professional development training is beneficial for anyone working in the area of mathematics, or supervising others who teach mathematics.  Teachers who are working with kindergarten through fifth-grade children are encouraged to take Add+VantageMR® Professional Development courses.  It is also beneficial for teachers at the middle scool elvel who work with students who have fallen at least two years behind grade level standards.
