MDE GUEST SPEAKER POLICY:Michigan Department of Education (MDE), released the Guest Speaker Policy on May 12, 2011. If you have a guest presenter for health, the highly qualified, certified teacher must teach over half the content and ALWAYS be in the room participating. Teachers should always know exactly what will be discussed and have content approved.
Since HIV and/or Sex Ed. are some of the more common content area where guest speakers are used, please remember, the teacher must provide instruction for over half the time when teaching the content. Advisory and approval rules still apply. Anyone teaching HIV must be certified through the Regional School Health Coordinator, Lisa Jo Gagliardi.
